“Good News” Sam Cooke

Oh my baby’s comin home tomorrow
Ain’t that good news
Yeah, ain’t that news
My baby is coming home tomorrow
Ain’t that news
Yeah, ain’t that news
I got a letter just the other day
Telling me that she was on her way
And she wants me to meet her at the station
Ain’t that good news
Yeah, ain’t that news
In the letter she told me she still loved me
Ain’t that good news
Yeah, ain’t that news
In the letter she told me she loved me
Ain’t that news
Yeah, ain’t that news
She said she’s sorry that she left
Found out she don’t want nobody else
She said she wants me all to herself now
Ain’t that good news
Yeah, ain’t that news

I’m sitting here in Starbucks and I looked across the way and there are people with ash crosses on their foreheads, proclaiming their intent to pursue a specific sanctifying restriction on their lives during the following days through Easter and this song just played on the speakers above my head and I got to thinking about the LORD.

Throughout the Old Testament, specifically in the Old Testament, especially Ezekiel, scripture describes Israel as a whore.  We just finished studying through the book of Hosea in my Community Group called “The Fellowship” and this entire book is about this topic of the unfaithful wife (Israel) and calling her to repent from her whoredom and return to her husband (YHWH).

In the New Testament we see this picture in the return of the prodigal son, again when Jesus says “I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:10), and James 5 when he says, “my brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.”

In Ezekiel, we see this very vivid picture of the continued faithfulness of YHWH, the unfaithfulness of Israel, and the passionate and strong urging and desire of the YHWH for His people to repent and turn back to Him.  He promises one day His faithfulness with be great, His Spirit will return to dwell among them, there will be rivers of living water flowing from His presence refreshing all of creation, and says in the last verse of Ezekiel 48, “And the name of the city from that time on shall be, ‘the Lord Is There.’”

It is GOOD NEWS when YHWH comes near, has fellowship with us, draws us to Himself EVEN THOUGH we play the whore, HE is faithful!  We are the prodigal son and He is the loving Father.  We are the sinner, HE is the Savior, we are the damsel in distress with no ability to save ourselves, and HE IS THE HERO WHO SAVES US FROM DESTRUCTION!!  AIN’T THAT GOOD NEWS!  So…write, pray, seek, find, and return to the LORD who is faithful and will be waiting at the train station for His wandering bride saying “my baby’s comin home tomorrow, ain’t that good news, yeah, ain’t that news!”  He wants to celebrate over you saying “for this (my child) was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found!”
